What Is a Sales Representative?
A Sales Representative is the person directly responsible for generating revenue by identifying prospects, running the sales process, and closing deals. The role spans specializations: an Inside Sales Representative typically sells remotely by phone, email, and video call, while a Field Sales Representative meets prospects and clients in person. Most hold a degree in business or a related field, though strong sales performance often matters more than formal education. They typically report to a Sales Manager or Head of Sales, and work closely with marketing for lead generation, customer success for handoff after close, and sales operations for CRM and reporting.
What Does a Sales Representative Do?
Day to day, a Sales Representative works a pipeline of leads in a CRM such as HubSpot or Salesforce, running discovery calls to understand prospect needs, delivering product demos, and negotiating terms to close deals. They log every interaction in the CRM, follow up consistently without letting deals go cold, and forecast which opportunities are likely to close within the period. When a deal stalls or a prospect goes quiet, it's the sales rep who diagnoses the blocker, whether it's budget, timing, or a missing stakeholder, and finds a way to move it forward.
