Besides these 27 general holidays, Telangana government has also given a list of 23 optional holidays for 2025, covering festivals like Shab-e-Barat, Basava Jayanthi, Ratha Yathra, Varalakshmi Vratham and Christmas Eve. Employees can take any 5 of these 23 in the year, and permission has to be applied for in writing in advance. All offices stay closed on Sundays and second Saturdays too, except 8 February 2025, which is a working day since 1 January fell on a Wednesday that year.
How Telangana Holidays Impact Payroll and Leave Management
Telangana's calendar has one thing most other states don't, a working second Saturday adjustment. Because 1 January 2025 was already a general holiday, the government made 8 February 2025 a working day to balance it out. If a leave system doesn't track this kind of swap, payroll can wrongly mark someone absent or wrongly give a day off on 8 February.
The other pressure point is the optional holiday list. With 23 choices and a cap of just 5, and each one needing prior written approval, HR ends up handling a lot of individual requests, especially around festivals like Shab-e-Barat, Ratha Yathra and Varalakshmi Vratham which fall close together. A good leave system tracks this cap automatically and shows the employee how many optional holidays are left, so HR is not manually checking each request against the yearly limit.
