Besides the two calendars above, Punjab also permits each employee to avail four second-half day holidays from a separate list of 15 occasions, including Vaisakhi, Janam Ashtami, Id-ul-Fitr, and Id-ul-Zuha, to attend Nagar Kirtan or Sobha Yatra events. The Controlling Authority maintains the record for these separately. Raksha Bandhan is specifically noted in the notification as falling on Saturday, 9 August 2025.

How Punjab Holidays Impact Payroll and Leave Management

Punjab's calendar has two dense stretches: late August into September, and the run of October into November. Between 24 August and 12 September alone, five distinct religious observances fall within a three-week window, several sharing the same date, such as 5 September carrying two separate entries. October is heavier still, with Dussehra, Karva Chauth, Diwali, Vishwakarma Day, Goverdhan Pooja, and Chhath Pooja all landing within a four-week span.

With 28 restricted holidays and a cap of two, plus 15 second-half day options capped at four, employees often want more days off than they're entitled to during these windows, and manual tracking makes it hard for HR to catch a request that exceeds someone's yearly allowance until after it's approved. A leave system that holds both lists, enforces both caps automatically, and shows employees their remaining balance before the festival season starts removes most of this friction for HR and payroll alike.
